Description: The Lovaas model of applied behavior analysis was developed in the psychology department of UCLA under the direction of Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas and used in the UCLA Young Autism Project. It is intended to provide intensive early intervention for young children with autism (under four years old when treatment starts).

Wikipedia (2012) describes Dr. Ivar Lovaas as a clinical psychologist at UCLA, who was born in 1927 and died in 2010. Dr. Lovaas is thought to be the "father" of ABA. I decided to look into this some more and found, through Wikipedia, that he created Early Intensive Behavior Intervention (EIBI), which is a form of ABA.

Guiding Lovaas, his students, and colleagues was the behaviorist tenet that all behavior is systematically shaped by its consequences. Ole Ivar Løvaas was a Norwegian-American clinical psychologist and professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is most well-known for his research on early behavior modification to teach autistic children through prompts, modeling, and positive reinforcement. It is also noted for its use of aversives to reduce undesired behavior. Lovaas founded the Lovaas Institute and co-founded the Autism Society of America.

Dr. Ivar Lovaas considered the goal of ABA to make autistic people ‘indistinguishable from their peers’. This aim puts all the responsibility for change on autistic people. Autistic people try so hard to get by in this world and often that means we compromise ourselves to ‘fit in’ with non-autistics.
